In 2018, you all helped Team Hadi raise over $58,000! That means nearly 600 new potential life-saving donors added to the Be The Match Registry. Thank you. Our goal by the end of 2019 is $100,000 - help us get there by making a gift here.
Did you know?
A marrow transplant can be a life-saving treatment for more than 70 diseases including Aplastic Anemia (what Hadi passed away from).
Seventy percent of patients do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match to find an unrelated marrow donor and receive the transplant they need.
Hadi's twin brother, Zakaria threw a book at Hadi in September of 2017. We didn't think much of Hadi's black eye but then we started to notice bruises on his back and figured his brother couldn't be giving him those. After some Google research, we decided to take Hadi to his pediatrician. After a stay at Fairfax/INOVA, Hadi was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. Aplastic anemia is a rare disease in which the bone marrow and the hematopoietic stem cells that reside there are damaged. This causes a deficiency of all three blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. We were told that the only cure would be a bone marrow transplant. Zakaria was tested to see if he was bone marrow match for Hadi and when it was discovered he was not, we were sent to NIH to try immunotherapy. When immunotherapy didn't turn out to be successful, we were told to go forward with a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated matched donor and we were happy to hear that Hadi had many matches and even more happy when one match quickly went through the process to donate bone marrow for our Hadi. Be the Match requires that we wait a year to meet this donor but obviously, we are beyond grateful. Hadi had his first bone marrow transplant back in December and his second in May (May 4th to be exact). Unfortunately, those transplants didn't take and Hadi lost his battle before we could begin his third transplant. As I tear up thinking about Hadi's donors, I want to do my part to ensure that others are able to find their bone marrow matches and in all honesty, I know it is exactly what young Jedi Hadi would want.
