I joined Team Be The Match to raise money for my marathon because I’m passionate about saving lives!
Six years ago I joined the Be The Match bone marrow registry in support of my friend and teammate, Grace Goblirsch, who was undergoing treatment for AML (acute mylogenous leukemia). Not long after I would be faced with the devastating news that Grace's courageous battle with cancer ended in heart failure two weeks before I recieved the call that I was a match to someone else battling leukemia. I'll never know why Grace's time with us here was cut much too short, but I do know that those unfortunate circumstances made me aware of not only an incredible organization, Be The Match, but also of a HOPE that those suffering from aggressive diseases, like leukemia, could have a second chance at life.
In college, the swim team that we were both a part of adopted the phrase "Race for Grace." This meant that every time we got up to race in the pool we would race for Grace because we were a team that agreed to have each others backs. While I may not be stepping up on the blocks to race in a pool anymore I have continued to hold onto that phrase as I figuratively and literally continue to Race for Grace in my life even if it means a 26.2 mile foot race.
26.2 miles to honor the impact that Grace had on my life and to hold onto the HOPE that through this organization a few less friends, families, and communities will have to experience the devastating effects that cancer can lead to. One thing I've learned about HOPE is that holding onto it requires perserverance and grit in the midst of pain and uncertainty. It takes determination, love, and a whole army of support to keep HOPE alive, but that, that is what I am believing for, that is what I am racing for.
I would love for you to help me reach my fundraising goal to continue this Race for Grace and for all of the people who are facing their own battle with life-threatening blood cancers. Your gift, of any amount, can help add new potential blood stem cell donors to the registry, assist patients with uninsured transplant costs, and fund innovative research to improve transplant outcomes. One thing that I know for sure is that this life is such a splendid gift and everyone has the power to make a difference whether it is through joining the registry, donating financially, or raising awareness!
Thank you! #RaceforGrace
