My name is Suzy Marino and I am starting this memorial fundraiser in honor of my bone marrow recipient, Owen McMasters. I joined the registry hopeful to be someone's match, which happened about two months after I joined. Little did I know at the time, my bone marrow went to one of the most incredibly deserving people on the planet: Owen. Vibrant, intelligent, and opinionated, I find out daily how similar Owen and I are, through similar likes and dislikes to parallel personality traits.
Owen passed away on February 15, 2016, at the age of 16, 14 months post-transplant, after a four year battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Though my marrow did not save him, it gave him extra time with his friends and family, and to enjoy some normal teenage activities.
Since Owen's passing, I have been able to learn so much about him through his family - who I now consider my own - and I've learned about the amazing contributions that Owen made to the world of pediatric cancer.
Because of Owen and his family's dedication to raising awareness and attention for pediatric cancers and research on their cures, I wanted to try my best to follow their amazing example, and fundraising for such a pure organization as near and dear to my heart as Be The Match seemed to be the most fitting.
Since my bone marrow donation, I've been volunteering as a Community Engagement Ambassador for Be The Match, and my eyes have been opened to the critical demand for funds and bone marrow donors.
If you have any questions about the donation process, why you should donate, or even just about my story, please feel free to email me at email@example.com
All contributions are also tax-deductible, and every penny counts. Please consider donating, because I can wholeheartedly say that causes more deserving than this are few and far between.
