Hi My name is Aya, I'm fourteen years old and I live in New Jersey and I love to surf. I went through a bone marrow transplant on August 1, 2012. I was born with Sickle Cell Anemia, a blood disorder and I was cured of this disease with a bone marrow transplant. One of the many stresses of the sickle cell disease is pain crisis.
I begin experiencing this painful ordeal from the age of three. I would experience pain in numerous parts of my body. The ordeal would start with pain that would escalate and get worst. My mom would have to take me to the hospital, they would admit me and the process would begin.
Generally they would always hydrate me and give pain medication to reduce the pain. I would always require oxygen, because of the pain I could not take deep breaths.
The older I got, my stays in the hospital increased and my pain levels would escalate. On August 1, 2012 I underwent a bone marrow transplant using marrow from an anonymous donor. The procedure was a success and I am now Sickle Cell free!
