Meet Ben (see personal page pictures)! Ben is 14. Like most kids at his age, he has so much life and energy. He has active hobbies: plays football, and rides snowmobiles/dirt bikes. Ben was recently diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) on 11/30/2015. This was a shock to him and his family. Ben’s life was at a halt.
I learned about Ben’s story through his loving mother who I work with at Boeing. When I heard this, I reflected and I was imagining myself in Ben’s shoes. I, too, have active hobbies (running, hiking, cycling, and snowboarding) and I couldn’t imagine myself going through the challenges of overcoming ALL. I thought about Ben’s condition and I felt the compassion towards him and his family.
I asked Ben’s mother several weeks later, “How can I help?” She shared with me the challenges of bone marrow transplants and the difficulties of finding a donor since his family members are not matches.
That is where I learned about Be the Match: for the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a cure exists. Over the past 25 years Be The Match ®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program ® (NMDP), has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. They work every day to save lives through transplant.
I joined Team Be The Match to raise money through the 2016 Boston Marathon because I’m passionate about Ben's story and saving lives!
Your gift can add new potential marrow donors to the registry, assist patients with uninsured transplant costs and fund innovative research to improve transplant outcomes.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a tax-deductible contribution. Your gift delivers cures to patients desperate for a second chance at life. Every dollar counts. Together, we can make a difference!
