I joined Team Be The Match because I have personally been affected by leukemia.
On August 12, 2013, I lost my best friend. My father, Varick, unselfishly took care of others, did not want any recognition for it, and never sought help from others. We were blindsided by his diagnosis of and short battle with leukemia. Ten days later, he would have turned 65, with plans to retire and spend time with me, my sister, and our families.
I joined the Be The Match Registry with the hope that I, personally, could help make sure that another family did not lose a loved one to blood cancer. If you are interested in joining the National Marrow Donor Program, I encourage you to visit bethematch.org.
On November 3, 2013, I completed my first marathon -- the Raleigh City of Oaks. He thought I was crazy when I registered, especially since I was doing it to impress my now wife. I knew he was looking down on me that day, and I started to tear up when I saw the finish line. I think of him when the finish line is in sight for every race I run, and I begin to tear up. It's one of the reasons I wear sunglasses when I race.
On October 2, 2016, I am running in the Rock 'n' Roll San Jose 10K. I've decided to use this race to help fundraise as a member of Team Be The Match. I hope to raise $1000, so more patients will get the bone marrow transplant needed to save their life. I hope you consider donating to this extremely worthy cause. Your gift can add new potential marrow donors to the registry, assist patients with uninsured transplant costs and fund innovative research to improve transplant outcomes.
Did you know?
A marrow transplant can be a life-saving treatment for more than 70 diseases including leukemia, lymphoma and sickle cell. Seventy percent of patients do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match to find an unrelated marrow donor and receive the transplant they need.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a tax-deductible contribution. Your gift delivers cures to patients desperate for a second chance at life. Every dollar counts. Together, we can make a difference!
