Manoj was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in August 2016. Manoj was 49 years old and a Urologic Oncology Surgeon who practiced in the Philadelphia area. He also treated Military Veterans at the Wilmington VA Medical Center. He was not only a physician, but also a successful inventor of medical devices to help improve patient lives during and after surgery. Manoj was married and the father of three children, an 12 year old daughter and 5 year old twins.
His family and friends organized numerous marrow registration drives throughout the South Asian community. Through these drives, we were able to find matches for several people with bone marrow diseases. After an exhaustive search, and through the kindness of a generous soul, Manoj was able to find his perfect match. Unfortunately, after an long, heroic and exhaustive fight, Manoj passed away in August surrounded by family and friends.
These same family and friends are encouraging others to do two things to honor Manoj's memory.
1) Please consider joining the Be The Match registry. In person or online at http://Join.Bethematch.org/ManojPatelWe are committed to providing the best possible outcome for patients. Doctors request donors in the 18-44 age group over 95% of the time. If you are between the ages of 45-60, you are welcome to continue with your registration, but will be required to make a $100 payment to cover the cost to join the registry.
2) In lieu of giving flowers for the service, we are asking for donations to Team Be The Match to raise money. Your tax deductible gift can add new potential marrow donors to the registry, assist patients with uninsured transplant costs and fund innovative research to improve transplant outcomes.
