Nick is a 13 year old from Gibsonia who just finished 7th grade at St Ursula School. Last Spring he was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia after an idiopathic liver hepatitis. He had less than 5% function in his bone marrow. His body was not producing white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets properly.
His best hope for a cure was a bone marrow transplant. The best match would have been a sibling donor, and last June his family learned that his 14 year old sister Madalyn was a perfect match! He underwent a successful transplant in July of last summer at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Nick and his family were very lucky with his match, but they are seeking to increase awareness for more people to join the registry in the event that people without sibling matches can have a second chance at life!
A simple cheek swab can enter you into a donor bank that can offer hope for someone. You can make a difference.
