I'm running the TC 10 Mile this year to raise funds for Be The Match Foundation. In the short time that I've been back at Be The Match, I've learned how much the Foundation funding helps connect patients to the transplant they need, so I want to do my part to make sure we can continue to support patients in their transplant journey.
Stem cell transplant, from donor bone marrow, peripheral blood, or cord blood, is a life-exending or life-saving treatment for over 70 diseases. I run for patients who depend on Be The Match to find their donor to give them hope. I run for Jenna Langer Vancura, who received an unrelated bone marrow tansplant in 2011 to treat her MDS. I met Jenna at the American Cancer Society Celebration on the Hill in 2006, where we were both volunteering as young cancer survivors. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma when she was 17, and the MDS was a result of her treatment for that cancer. Jenna went to college with her bald head and led the Univeristy of Minnesota's Relay for Life event while she was there, then went to DC for a public relations job, chasing her dream. Her MDS diagnosis changed her plans, but she still got married, kept volunteering for ACS with a trip to Lobby Day in 2011, and got to meet her donor, Maxine. But cancer is a real bitch, and it came back with a vengence in 2014. Jenna passed away right after the new year in 2015; i run to honor her spirit, her fight, and her determination to always dance.
Your gift can add new potential blood stem cell donors to the registry, assist patients with uninsured transplant costs, and fund innovative research to improve transplant outcomes.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal of $500 by making a tax-deductible contribution. Your gift delivers cures to patients desperate for a second chance at life. Every dollar counts. Together, we can make a difference!
