I have been running the Twin Cities 10 Mile (part of marathon weekend) since 2009 with my dad. Since he is one of very few that has run all of them he gets an automatic spot while I deal with the lottery. While I've had fairly good luck with that, it hasn't always worked.
So I was thrilled to see a notice that Be The Match has 10 guaranteed spots for the event. Then I saw the fine print. To get one of the spots I had to do some fundraising. This had me pause as one of the things I said when going into non-profit was I did not want to have to fundraise - it is not one of my strengths!
After thinking about it, I realized that raising money for an organization that I'm really proud to be part of isn't that tough. I have learned so much in my short time there. Unfortunately, most of it is how much work there is still left to do: Every three minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia. For many, their only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant.
I attended training for new employees to review our mission, vision and operating principles. All have potential to be very dry topics except when it starts with our mission of "We save lives through cellular therapy". We facilitated 6,188 transplants last year but there were 16,278 who tried to find a match through us. We are working hard every day to close that gap by increasing the diversity in the registry, availability/accessibility of a donation, and clinical research.
The highlight for me was hearing from a recipient who learned at 69 he had leukemia. The doctors did not find a good donor but through Be The Match found cord blood that was a possibility. While he only had a 45% chance of survival, it was a success and he has had the past 7 years to continue enjoying life. It was very inspiring to hear.
Your gift can add new potential blood stem cell donors to the registry, assist patients with uninsured transplant costs, and fund innovative research to improve transplant outcomes.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a tax-deductible contribution. Your gift delivers cures to patients desperate for a second chance at life. Every dollar counts. Together, we can make a difference!
