Calling all Storm Families!
Mia McPoland is a seventh grade student here at Santan. She was diagnosed at six weeks old with a rare illness called Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare blood disorder that prevents her bone marrow from producing red blood cells. Mia receives red blood cell transfusions every three weeks at Cardon Children’s Medical Center and has endured over 132 blood transfusions --Thank you United Blood Services. Mia's only hope for a cure would be a bone marrow transplant via Be The Match.
Be The Match is the World's largest bone marrow donor registry. Mia's three sisters have been tested but are not a sibling match to Mia. Someone reading this could be Mia's match, or someone else's perfect match. YOU could help save a life.
Ask Friends and Family to Join Us –Donate Blood & Get Tested
Be The Match & United Blood Services – will be here at Santan Junior High on Monday, December 14th, in our gymnasium from 2pm – 7pm. Ask friends and family to donate blood (you must be 18yoa) by signing up now on our website at www.cusd80.com/sjhs . You can also get a simple ‘cheek swab’ for a possible marrow match. This is at no cost if you are between the ages of 18-44 years old. If you are ‘over qualified’ (meaning too old) please consider ordering your home swab test kit for $100 ( the cost to process each test) at http://join.marrow.org/marrow. Childcare will be available during the blood donation process.
How Can Your Family Help?
We are hoping that all Santan families can make a donation to Be The Match in Mia’s honor. We have set our school goal at $5,000. This equals $3.60 per student and would pay for 50 potential matches to be added to the Be The Match registry.
•Donate online with a credit card directly to Be the Match by clicking the blue "Make a Gift" button above.
•Cash or check donations will be accepted in the front office or you can turn it in directly to your 3rd hour teacher with the attached pledge form, checks payable to Be The Match.
•Students will get involved the week of December 7-11th with A Mia Minute (collecting student spare change,) Wear a Hat for a Dollar Day, selling bracelets and pins for $1, and donating to Mia’s Marrow Wall in our café during lunches.
Thank you in advance for your support.
