Please help us raise funds to increase the number of African Americans on the National Bone Marrow Registry
We Are Honoring
TAMAR TAMLER HENRY
Our daughter Rachel Brown’s Bone Marrow Donor
In 2015 we raised over half the money towards our goal of $20,000.
Please help us raise another $7,000 to reach our goal in 2016.
RACHEL AND TAMAR’S STORY
Six and a half years ago, at the age of 27, our daughter, Rachel, a first grade teacher, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). After undergoing chemotherapy treatments, her doctors informed us that a bone marrow transplant was needed to save her life. After determining that her sister, Tanya, was not a match, we turned to Be The Match to help her find an unrelated donor. Rachel was one of the lucky ones to find a donor, Tamar, who was a perfect match. On April 3, 2009, Rachel received the bone marrow transplant.
In the fall of 2010, after a long recovery, Rachel and her then boyfriend and now husband, Eli, moved to Oregon. In the summer of 2011, Rachel and Eli ran the Team in Training triathlon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Rachel and her donor, Tamar, met in 2012. They found out they have much in common and continue to stay in touch today (See photo of Tamar and Rachel, Tamar on the right, Rachel on the left).
Last summer, Rachel and Eli moved back to the New York area to be closer to family and friends. Friday, April 3 of this year was both the 6th anniversary of Rachel’s transplant and the first night of Passover. We were so blessed to be able to celebrate together.
Why We Are Asking For Your Help
During Rachel’s ordeal, we became acutely aware of how difficult it is for some people to find matches, and particularly African Americans. We determined that we wanted to raise funds to add African Americans to the Be The Match Registry so that others have an increased chance of finding matches. (For more information about bone marrow transplants and why ethnicity matters, click here http://bethematch.org/transplant-basics/matching-patients-with-donors/why-race-and-ethnicity-matter).
Please help us with this life-saving effort by making a contribution to the Be the Match Registry to support bone marrow drives for African Americans who are so greatly underrepresented on the national registry.
