La Salle HS - Team Matt Hils

Matt Hils, much loved Professor of Biology and Director of the Center for the Study of Nature and Society and the J.H. Barrow Field Station, has been an indispensable member of the Hiram community since 1984. He is our colleague, professor, advisor, mentor, and friend. Matt is battling large-cell lymphoma, and his best chance of a cure is through a bone marrow transplant.

The large-cell lymphoma that has taken over his bone marrow is very aggressive. The only cure is a stem cell transplant (aka bone marrow transplant). Unfortunately there are no matching donors in the Be The Match Registry. Please consider joining the Be The Match Registry at the Bone Marrow Drive!

Matt was born in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, but raised in Cincinnati, where his mother grew up. His father’s family lived in Kentucky, so he spent a lot of time traveling back and forth across the Mason-Dixon Line. This continued with his education as he went to La Salle High School in suburban, Cincinnati, then on to Thomas More College in Northern Kentucky for a B.A. in biology. He got a Master’s degree in botany, with emphasis in plant ecology, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, then went on to the University of Florida in Gainesville for a Ph.D. in botany, with a specialty in plant anatomy and systematics. He arrived at Hiram in the fall of 1984 and immersed himself into the life of a wonderful academic village.

His courses involve lots of time in the field, collecting and working with living organisms. In the vascular plants systematics course, students take a 10 day trip starting in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to catch the peak of the spring wildflower bloom, and finish at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis to work with a world class collection of living and preserved specimens. Matt also led several study programs most recently to Trinidad and Tobago and the Galapagos Islands.
