This is all new to me. When I started working for Be The Match in late January, I thought to myself, "I don't personally know anyone affected by blood cancer or who has needed a marrow transplant." I quickly discovered that just by learning more about Be The Match, I had become part of the family, and that anyone with leukemia, sickle cell, lymphoma, or any other disease that can be eradicated with a marrow transplant, was now a family member that I could potentially save.
Yep, you heard me. Blood cancer has a cure. If you're between the ages of 18-44, you can register to become a marrow donor for free. What are you waiting for?? Visit www.join.bethematch.org and we will mail you 4 cotton swabs to send back to us (in a pre-paid envelope!). It's a no-brainer. And don't listen to that voice in your head that seems to think it might be painful to donate or that it will cost you money in the process. That voice is wrong. You might get a call in 3 months, 3 years, 3 decades, or you may never get the call, but how cool would it be to save a stranger's life?!
Now, while you can join the registry for free, it will cost Be The Match approximately $100 to process your swabs and get you into the system. That's why I'm here on your computer or smartphone screen, with my hand outstretched, asking you to put dollars on this page. Your gift will help to off-set the cost to add members to the registry, and it will also fund research to improve the outcomes for a patient who receives a life-saving transplant. AND Be The Match offers support to patients who need help paying for stuff you might not even think about, like housing during their recovery or their medications (many patients take 20 or more medications per day during recovery - that's $500 in prescription co-pays each month).
Those of you who know me know that as an independent lady, I don't like to ask for money. But this isn't about me. It's about the mom and dad who could lose their 2-year-old son if they don't find a match, or the college freshman who has been searching for a match for several years because she is African-American and minorities are super under-represented on the registry.
If you can, contribute using the "Make a Gift" button right above these paragraphs. Yeah, that blue one. You want your name scrolling on my fundraising honor roll, don't you? And ask your employer if he/she will match your gift. That will, like, double your donation!
If you can't give a monetary gift, for goodness' sake, offer hope by joining the marrow registry. We don't need a cure; we already have one. We need YOU!

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Do right, join the fight.
