It is fitting that on the first anniversary of our dad's passing, Be The Match Foundation is having a run (Saturday April 29, 2017) in Chicago benefiting those with blood cancers who need life saving Bone Marrow Transplants. We need YOU to join the fight and help more patients.
November 2015 our dad was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow cancer, Myelofibrosis. We started the process feeling extremely optomistic about curing our dad of this terrible disease. Through chemo treatment my dad never lost sight of the end goal, coming home. And when we learned both sisters were a perfect match for his life saving stem cell transplant, the future was looking bright. He had a succesful stem cell transplant, blood levels were increasing, and at times was starting to feel pretty good. Unfortunately, little did we know doctors were not able to wipe out the myelofibrosis, and the disease quietly progressed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia - a very aggressive disease.
Our dad lost his battle unexpectedly on April 28, 2016, surrounded peacefully by his family. The final week we were full of ups and downs, hope, and ultimately despair - a true emotional rollercoaster ride. Throughout it all, our dad never complained or felt sorry for himself. He saw this as a battle he would face head on and committed himself fully to making a recovery while spending months away from family at the hospital, and put faith in his team of outstanding doctors at the University of Chicago.
Our family finds comfort in the hope that other families will not feel the same loss we did, knowing that there IS life saving treatment and a cure. We hope together we can help make a difference in the lives of others.
We'd like you to join us by either by making a financial gift or by joining our team to RUN and helping us reach our fundraising goal.
The money we raise will:
Please support us in memory of our dad! After the run we will also be meeting at an Irish Bar (details will be sent to those who are joining) near the event for lunch. Since we cannot celebrate our dad coming home cured from the disease, we are spending the day in his memory doing what he would have loved most - listening to Irish music, drinking beer, surrounded by family and friends.
Thank you for all your support and generosity! Please join us!
Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Do right, join the fight.
