Hi all -
Thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page :) Read on to learn why I'm participating in this year's Be The Match Walk+Run Chicago...
In July 2017, I received a phone call from Be The Match (BTM) informing me that I was a bone marrow match for an unknown cancer patient battling an aggressive form of leukemia. I had completely forgotten that I'd joined the BTM registry back in 2012 at the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. For those of you who are unfamiliar, BTM is an organization that exists to save lives through bone marrow transplants and for the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers, a cure exists through normal people like me and you.
Most are under the impression that siblings would be a perfect match for them if they ever needed a bone marrow transplant. However, there's only a 1 in 4 (25%) chance of you perfectly matching with a brother or sister, if you even have one. If they're not a match, that's when your doctor turns to an unrelated, anonymous donor in the BTM system (and registries across the world) in the hopes that your perfect match took a leap of faith to register. A cancer patient could be out there at this very moment waiting for you like mine was, hoping their oncologist will soon walk through the door and say, "We have a donor."
I invite you to join me in helping raise funds to save more patients' lives - it's amazing how my cells (and potentially yours!) have the ability to bring someone new life.
The money I and fellow Chicagoans raise will:
If you don't feel called to donate money at this time, I empower you to consider joining the registry. BTM will send you a kit in the mail and all you have to do is swab the inside of your cheek - IT'S THAT SIMPLE!
If you're curious, I ended up donating stem cells in September 2017; the process took less than two months from start to finish and I would do it all over again if I had the opportunity. I can't put into words how the donation has impacted my outlook on life and my heart - this was a blessing if I've ever experienced one. I pray every day that my recipient is returning back to good health and that I get to meet him one day to say thank you, for helping put everything in perspective and for reminding me to not sweat the small stuff: life is too damn short for that.

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Join the fight.
