Back on a Monday in late October 2015, I was feeling tired all the time. Even though I had pneumonia two weeks before, I didn’t think it would take this long to get back to 100%. So I went to a walk in clinic and told them there still seems to be something wrong even though they said my pneumonia would be gone in a week. They did a blood test, and a day later I got an alarming call to come in at once. To make a long story short, by Friday I was told to report to the hospital as an inpatient and to plan for a “month long stay, maybe longer”.
I had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), an aggressive blood cancer which had to be taken care of immediately. Over time, more information became revealed, and it was determined that this first 6-7 weeks would be heavy chemo, then more chemo, then they would search for a donor to find a Bone Marrow Transplant, which would happen in late February (along with more radiation and chemo). All through this trying time, I had great support from friends, family and my girlfriend (now wife) Mika, who always stood by me through every trying part of this process.
Thanks to Be The Match, my donor was found, and she very kindly agreed to donate. It an almost perfect match and the transplant was successful. Three years after diagnosis things are still looking up and Be The Match, who facilitated this entire transplant process, is a big reason why. I want to do what I can to increase funding for this organization and get as many people on the registry as possible. Everyone who needs a transplant should be able to get as good of a match as I was able to. It is important to have people from diverse ethnic backgrounds join so that there is better representation across the entire registry.
Please donate to our team if you can, and also join the Be The Match registry. Thank you!

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Join the fight.
