On September 8, 2016, we lost my brother Marshall Neilson to complications associated with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He was a beloved member of our family, an indispensible husband and father to his wife Liz and daughters Bea, Parker, and Molly. His extended family included his mother and father, his stepmother, his parents-in-law, his three sisters, one brother, three step-siblings, and a great many in-laws, cousins, neices, and nephews.
And then there were the friends--so many friends. If you didn't know Marshall, you would have liked him. He was extraordinarly kind and actively sought to live generously. His favorite holidays were Thanksgiving and Christmas, in that order. He wrote great letters--even now, in the 21st century. He was just a terrific guy to now.
Like so many people lost to cancer, Marshall was someone the world could ill-afford to lose. This is an important reason--beyond the fact that we miss him and want to remember him every day--that we run this Be The Match Walk+Run team each year. During the period of Marshall's treatment, it was my very great privilege to provide him a bone marrow transplant, having been identified as a match. We run (and walk) each year in his memory in order to expand awareness about the important work that Be The Match does, and to raise funds so that the organization may continue with that work.
Please join us! You can remember Marshall by running or walking on Saturday, November 18th, in Long Beach, or simply support the team with your donations. Please note that while there is a 5k race for folks who are eager to compete and disport themselves in the vigorosity of their youth (or old age), there are also extremely low-key options for participations, including a 1k walk and a tot trot for kids! We have a tremendous amount of fun, and I hope you'll consider getting involved.
I look forward to seeing you there!

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Join the fight.
