My Be The Match story begins with a registry event on campus while I was in college. Two friends and I easily joined the registry (it only took a cheek swab). I assumed I'd never be matched but dutifully confirmed my desire to be in the registry each year. Then five years later I got an e-mail. I was a potential match for a patient. I remember the phone calls, the forms, and the most extensive physical I'd ever received with multiple blood tests, a chest X-ray, and an EKG. Finally it was confirmed I was selected as the donor. I donated peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) which I was selfishly glad about because I got to return to my exercise routine with F3 the next day. While I was donating I saw patients receiving transfusions and it made my donation process a little easier as I saw what they were enduring and my hope was that I could help one of them.
Fast forward a year and my recipient and I agreed to exchange contact information. And here's where it got crazy. All I knew for a year was I donated to a male who lived somewhere in North America. I found out my recipient was a CPA like me. Lived in the same town I grew up in. Went to a church my parents know attended. Was close friends of the pastor at the church, whose daughter went to school with me from elementary school through high school. The connections were unbelievable! We finally met each other and our families in person on Easter in an incredible experience.
After becoming active with F3 again I looked to see if Be The Match had a race nearby I could participate in. Seeing only six locations I didn't hold out much hope, but included in the list was Charlotte! Another incredible coincidence.

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Join the fight.
