If you're reading this, then I already owe you my sincere thanks. (I assure you that the paragraphs below are worth just a few more moments of your time...I tried to be as concise as possible!)Be The Match is a fantastic organization that literally helps to save lives every single day; but I'm running and looking to raise funds because of very personal reasons and a story that only one or two of you reading this ( before now ) knew about. On the evening of February 28th of this year, sitting on a city bus I received a voicemail and text message from Be The Match telling me to call them back immediately. I couldn't believe my eyes or my ears, but I was told that I was very likely an ideal Match for a cancer patient who was in immediate need. I hopped right off the bus and went on to have a 90 minute phone conversation with a wonderful member of the Donor Contact Team on the wide median of the Grand Concourse in The Bronx. I had many questions, and felt that I needed to know as much as possible, as soon as possible.Consciously, I understood what had just been told to me; but even my long subway journey home wasn't really enough to process what I knew in that moment.I asked many questions which were graciously and promptly answered, and then consulted with two of the closest people in my life about whether this was something I should do. These people knew that I had already made up my mind when the conversation began, but I was (and am) grateful for their essential counsel in such a critical moment.
Within a day, I informed the Donor Center that I would agree to begin the process of becoming a Bone Marrow Donor to a patient who was MATCHED to me in their hour of need.
Ultimately, there was another individual Donor who was a greater genetic match to the patient recipient, and that person completed the donation. But from start to finish, I cannot speak any more highly about the professionalism and compassion of Be The Match staff members, the staff of the local partner donation center, and every single person who was involved in the multiple blooddraws, screenings, and paperwork that was part of the process.I'm a Met fan who joined the Be The Match Registry 9-10 years ago at a Yankee Game with friends. All it takes is a cheek swab to potentially save someone's life.Whether I had completed the Donation Process or not, I had wanted to keep my story private. "Why?"; some of you might ask. My answer is simple. I don't want a medal, I don't want to be showered in praise, I don't want or need any of that. All I needed to know was that when given the opportunity to help any person in need, that I would personally step up and answer the call.I'm running this year to support the organization that makes all of this possible. I'm just a guy who took 2 seconds to visit a table at a baseball game and answered the phone ten years later, and I had the opportunity to save a life.I've set a fundraising goal, (and contributed what I can personally at the moment) BUT I'm kindly asking for help from anyone who would like to help me reach it. And maybe beat it?The money I (we) raise will:
I thank you for any support you are willing and able to provide and together we can show blood cancer it has met its match. I hope that YOU will join the fight with me and save more lives.
I can't properly thank any of you enough for your support, but on behalf of the Patients who are still waiting for their Match and Be The Match, you ALL have my deepest gratitude.

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, need a marrow transplant to survive. Most patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family — and that’s when they turn to Be The Match®. By participating in a Be The Match Walk+Run, or donating funds, you are providing life-saving support to those patients in need. Join the fight.
