Stories of Hope
In early 2011 Sandy received news that would change her life she had Acute Myeloid Leukemia and was immediately admitted to the hospital. She spent a full five weeks in the hospital to achieve remission only to relapse a year and a half later. Her doctors created a new plan and determined the best course of action was more aggressive chemo and a bone marrow transplant.
In October 2012 Sandy received an unrelated transplant from a 28 year old male somewhere in the United States. Following the one year waiting period, Sandy learned that her live saving donation had come from Brandon and that he and his wife lived in Missouri.
In the spring of 2015 Brandon was traveling to Columbus, Ohio for work and Sandy, her husband and her friend Lisa, also a transplant recipient were able to meet Brandon! Upon meeting Brandon, Sandy said, “I felt joy and love in my heart. I couldn’t stop smiling for days! I know now what a hero looks like.”
Sandy remains in remission and continues to correspond regularly with Brandon. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Be The Match, the selfless gift from a complete stranger, and a lot of prayers being answered.” - Sandy
When Stella was 8-years-old, she was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer called acute myeloid leukemia. Doctors said she needed a bone marrow transplant right away, but like most patients, she did not have a matching donor in her family. Because of her mixed heritage, there was a 2% chance of Stella finding an unrelated donor.
Fortunately, Travis, a 29-year-old man from Colorado, had joined the Be The Match Registry® -- 10 years prior. Travis was Stella’s best hope for a cure.
After months of tests, treatment, and preparation, Stella finally received her bone marrow transplant.
