Swab 4 Laila

Over the past 14 months , Laila has been in and out of St. Louis Children’s Hospital spending over 50 nights in-patient and has endured Countless procedures including Spinal Taps, EEG’s, MRI’s, numerous Brain Scans as well as an operation to obtain a Brain Biopsy.

Due to the extreme rarity of Laila’s disease, her diagnosis was only recently discovered and confirmed as being HLH. This particular diagnosis has only been identified in 15 other children in the WORLD and none of them have the specific Genetic Mutation Gene Change that Laila has which has seriously impacted her Brain.

Laila will have a surgical procedure on October 16th to insert a central line or port in her chest and start her Chemotherapy Treatment regimen for the coming months.  The doctors will also be harvesting a Bone Marrow sample from her at that time.

The search will then begin to find a MUST needed Bone Marrow donor match for her stem cell transplant, following her Chemotherapy Treatments.

As Laila’s family, we would welcome and encourage you to join the Be The Match Registry in Honor of Laila.

Team Be The Match is a nationwide community committed to helping patients in need of a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant by raising funds to add potential marrow donors to Be The Match Registry®. By supporting Team Swab 4 Laila, you will help more patients afford transplant, add potential marrow donors to the Be The Match Registry® and fund our life-saving research. Together we have the potential to truly make a difference to thousands of men, women and children in need of a life-saving transplant. Did you know a marrow transplant can be a life-saving treatment for more than 70 diseases including leukemia, lymphoma and sickle cell. Seventy percent of patients do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match to find an unrelated marrow donor and receive the transplant they need.

Every 3 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer like Leukemia. For many of these and other patients with diseases like sickle cell anemia, a marrow transplant is the only life-saving treatment-their only chance for a cure. Yet most don’t have a matching marrow donor in their family.

Every year, more than 12,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers—like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases for which a marrow or cord blood transplant from an unrelated donor may be their best or only hope of a cure.

70% of all patients who need a transplant do not have a matched donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match Registry® to find an unrelated donor or cord blood unit.

Every 10 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. That’s more than six people each hour, or 148 people each day.

More than 70 diseases can be treated & cured by a matched unrelated donor transplant.

Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.

They turn to Be The Match for the largest most diverse registry of potential marrow donors and cord blood units in the world, offering one-on-one support, education and guidance before, during and after transplant. But first, a marrow match must be found, and many patients still don’t have a donor.
